Global warming and climate change is something that affects everyone and unfortunately it is not an issue that will simply go away if ignored. In recent years, the government has started to introduce legislation to help minimise our carbon footprint.
There are a range of national and international laws and agreements which address the planets growing environmental concerns. In 2007, the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 was put into force in Australia. The Act requires corporations to register with the National Greenhouse and Energy Register and report to the Greenhouse and Energy Data Officer, if their corporate groups emit greenhouse gases, produce energy or consume energy at or above specified quantities over a financial year.
Since July 2008, it has been a requirement for corporations to register and report if companies in their corporate group control facilities that emit 25 kilotonnes or more of greenhouse gases, or produce/consume 100 terajoules or more of energy. Corporations are also required to report if their corporate group emits 125 kilotonnes or more of greenhouse gas or produces/consumes 500 terajoules or more of energy.
Failure to report these emissions can result in the corporations facing financial or civil penalties, so it is important for the business to implement an effective compliance program to minimise the risk of breaches of the reporting legislation.
Monitoring and reporting your company's co2 emissions can be a difficult task. Corporations who are inexperienced in this type of reporting are more likely to make mistakes which could be costly to the business. Advantage Partnership Lawyers can help to eliminate the difficulty, confusion and worry when it comes to doing your bit to help the earth.
